News and Notes
Senior Chad Prosser has a 17-game hitting streak which began on March 15. During those 17 games, Prosser is second on the team with a .352 batting average and leads UNC with 25 hits. Prosser has hit safely in 30 of Carolina's 33 games this season and ranks fifth on the team with a .331 batting average. The Tar Heels' shortstop has also reached base safely in 31 consecutive games.
Carolina is now 4-5 in the ACC after dropping two out of three games to Georgia Tech last weekend at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels next face the Maryland Terrapins (0-8 ACC) whom they swept to begin ACC play in 2002.
After playing 23 of their last 26 games at home, UNC will play four games on the road this week for the first time all season. The Tar Heels travel to Wilmington on Wednesday before heading to College Park for a three game series versus Maryland this weekend. Carolina is just 1-4 when playing away from Boshamer Stadium this season.
Top Performers
Jeremy Cleveland batted .421 (8-for-19) last week with a double, a triple and three home runs. Cleveland had nine RBIs on the week and led the Tar Heels with a 1.053 slugging percentage. He reached base 11 times in 22 plate appearances and went 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts. Cleveland provided all of Carolina's offense in Wednesday's 6-1 victory over Coastal Carolina in which he went 3-for-3 with two home runs and six RBIs. Cleveland leads UNC in most offensive categories including batting average (.403), runs (38), home runs (8), RBIs (37), slugging percentage (.697), and on-base percentage (.510).
Freshman Adam Kalkhof continued to be Carolina's most impressive pitcher so far this season. Kalkhof picked up his team-leading fifth win of the season in Saturday's victory over #8 Georgia Tech. He tied his career-high by striking out ten Yellow Jacket batters and gave up just two earned runs in 7.1 innings of work. Kalkhof faced the minimum and did not allow a hit through 6.2 innings. Finally with two outs in the seventh inning, Georgia Tech's Matt Murton broke up Kalkhof's no-hitter with a solo home run. The freshman lefthander leads the Tar Heels in wins (5), innings pitched (41.0), strikeouts (46), and is first among UNC starters with a 3.29 ERA.
