Two Carolina Players Selected to Women's Golf All-ACC Team

Chapel Hill, N.C. - Two University of North Carolina women's golfers have been named to the 2003 All-Atlantic Coast Conference team as selected by a vote of the league's six head coaches. Junior Ashley Prange earned all-conference honors for the second consecutive year while junior Meaghan Francella, this year's ACC Champion, received All-ACC accolades for the first time.
Duke, this year's ACC championship team, placed three players on the squad of seven - juniors Leigh Anne Hardin and Virada Nirapathpongporn and freshman Elizabeth Janangelo. Nuria Clau from Wake Forest and Kristin Tamulis from Florida State were also selected to the team.
Wake Forest's Clau was named the ACC Player of the Year while Duke's Janangelo was selected Rookie of the Year and Dan Brooks from Duke received Coach of the Year accolades for the eighth time in his career.
Prange, from Noblesville, Ind., captured the first victory of her collegiate career last fall, winning the Mercedes-Benz Championship with a two-over-par 218 total. Prange has posted six top-10 finishes this year. In addition to her win, she was the runner-up at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate, tied for third place at the Lady Paladin Invitational, tied for fourth at the ACC/SEC Challenge, tied for ninth at the Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational and tied for 10th at the ACC Championship.
Francella, from Port Chester, N.Y., and a junior transfer from Memphis, captured the biggest win of her career when she won the ACC Championship. After carding a 77 in the first round, Francella concluded the 54-hole event with a pair of two-under 69s to finish with a two-over 215 total for a one-stroke win. Francella has posted seven top-30 finishes this year and has been the low Tar Heel in three of this spring's four tournaments. In Francella's top-20 finishes, she tied for ninth at the Bryan National Collegiate, tied for 12th at the ACC/SEC Challenge, tied for 14th at the Lady Paladin Invitational and tied for 17th place at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic.
The Tar Heels travel to Clemmons, N.C., May 8-11, to play in the NCAA East Regional. The 54-hole event will be played at Salem Glen Country Club which features a par 71, 6,114-yard layout.
