Six Tar Heels Selected In 2003 Major League Baseball Draft

North Carolina had six players drafted in the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft. Pitcher Daniel Moore was drafted by the San Diego Padres with the fourth pick in the second round, the 41st pick overall. The 6'5 junior southpaw out of Spencer, NC has been Carolina's number one starter all season and has posted a 7-2 record. Moore has recorded 18 wins in his career as a Tar Heel.
Outfielder Jeremy Cleveland was drafted by the Texas Rangers with the ninth pick in the eighth round. Cleveland was the 226th player selected overall. The junior from Fairfax, Va. has had a remarkable season at the plate, batting .406 with 19 home runs and 64 RBIs. With one more hit, Cleveland will become just the second player in UNC history to record 100 hits in a single season.
Catcher and first baseman Ryan Blake was the 653rd player selected overall in the 22nd round by the Florida Marlins. The senior from Kernersville, NC was named second-team All-ACC this season and is fifth on the team with 43 RBIs. He was also drafted out of high school by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 22nd round in 1998.
Outfielder Sean Farrell was drafted by the Oakland Athletics with the 752nd overall pick in the 25th round. The senior from Charlotte, NC is second on the team with 14 home runs and 61 RBIs. Farrell's 214 career runs batted in ties him with Jarrett Shearin for the most career RBIs in Carolina baseball history.
Shortstop Chad Prosser was the 839th overall selection by the Houston Astros in the 28th round. The senior from Austell, Ga. is Carolina's all-time leader with 290 career hits. Prosser is batting .296 with two home runs and 40 RBIs.
Third baseman Sammy Hewitt was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 34th round with the 1006th overall pick. The junior from Hubert, NC is second on the team with a .362 batting average and third with ten home runs.
