SPRING, TEXAS -- The University of Texas (No. 5 Soccer America, No. 11 NSCAA, No. 12 Soccer Buzz, Soccer Times) women's soccer team (3-2) lost a hard-fought battle in double overtime to consensus No. 1 North Carolina (5-0), as Tar Heel seniormidfielder Maggie Tomecka scored an unassisted goal at 104:38 to lift the Tar Heels to a 1-0 victory over the Longhorns during the first game of the 2003 Women's College Classic at Meyer Park in front of 827 fans on Friday evening. The result of this match marks the third consecutive year that UT and UNC have played a game decided by one goal.
oth teams played an even first half with almost all statistics equal. In the second period, each side pressed their offensive attacks with North Carolina leading the way behind a 10-shot effort. Even so, freshman goalkeeper Dana Hall and the Longhorns defense held the Tar Heels scoreless to send the game into the first overtime knotted at 0-0. In fact, UNC managed a pair of breakaways in the second half, but Hall forced both shots wide of the goal.
After the first overtime, the game remained at 0-0 as both teams played a stellar brand of defense. Then, in the second extra period, UNC broke the deadlock as Tomecka corralled the ball off of a broken play at the top of the Longhorns penalty area and fired a shot that squeezed by Hall and dribbled over the goal line to end the game.
Shouldering the loss, despite making a match-best eight saves was Hall, while UNC's Ali Winget picked up the win for North Carolina by posting five saves to earn the shutout, her fourth of the season. The Tar Heels attack was led by Lindsay Tarpley, who tallied a game-high five of UNC's 24 shots on the night. Headlining the Texas offense on the evening was the freshmen tandem of Nikkie Thaden and Carrie Schmit, who each accounted for two of the Horns' nine shots for the game, and Kelly McDonald, who had a number of chances thwarted at the North Carolina goal.
The Tar Heels will stick around Houston to play another game in the tournament, meeting Texas A&M Sunday at 2:30 p.m. EDT. The Aggies are ranked No. 5 by Soccer Buzz and the NSCAA, No. 5 by Soccer Times and No. 15 by Soccer America. Up next for Texas, the Horns return to Mike A. Myers Stadium to host their home opener of the 2003 season against LSU on Sunday, September 14th, at 7:30 p.m.
