UNC Volleyball Beats Kansas In Thrilling Five-Game Match

Lawrence, Kan. - The North Carolina volleyball team won a gut-wrenching five game match over Kansas Saturday night at the Hampton Inn/Jayhawk Claasic. UNC won 30-22, 30-27, 23-30, 16-30, 21-19 and junior outside hitter Molly Pyles was named MVP of the tournament.
Pyles had 14 kills, seven digs and three blocks to lead the Tar Heels over host Kansas. Junior middle hitter Katie Wright and sophomore outside hitter Dani Nyenhuis also helped lead the Tar Heels to victory. Wright had 16 kills and six blocks while Nyenhuis had 13 kills and nine digs.
"This was a great victory," said head coach Joe Sagula. "It was a hard fought victory against a great Kansas team. It was a nail-biter and being able to pull it out gave us confidence that we can win on the road."
Other UNC players that helped out in the victory included senior middle hitter Aletha Green and junior libero Caroline deRoeck. Green had eight kills and eight blocks, while deRoeck had a career-high 28 digs.
"The team as a whole was outstanding," said Sagula. "Katie Wright, Dani Nyenhuis and Molly Pyles all had fantastic performances."
Along with Pyles on the all-tournament team were Nyhenhuis and Wright. North Carolina improved their overall record to 6-2. They next host Charlotte Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in Carmicahel Auditorium and then head to Evanston, Illinois Sept. 19 and 20 to face Northwestern, Florida and Chicago State at the Wildcat Classic.
