Chapel Hill, N.C. - North Carolina extended its home winning streak to 22 games by defeating Charlotte 3-0. UNC won 30-23, 30-26, 30-18. The Tar Heels had a balanced attack as eleven different players recorded kills.
Sophomore outside hitter Dani Nyenhuis led the Tar Heels with ten kills and eleven digs for her third double-double of the season. Junior outside hitter Molly Pyles had seven kills and nine digs and junior libero Caroline deRoeck had twelve digs.
"I'm happy with the fact that our team can win at home," said Head Coach Joe Sagula. "I'm glad we got the opportunity for some people to get some experience. I think it also showed we made some improvements, but there are also some things we need to improve on."
Freshman outside hitter Meg Eckert started the match and had five kills as well as five digs. Junior setter Norma Cortez had 21 assists as she split time with sophomore McKenzie Byrd at the setter position. Byrd recorded 13 assists for the match.
"We know we are a solid team, and we know that we are a talented bunch of individuals, but as a team, we haven't yet gotten there yet," said Pyles.
UNC improved to 7-2 as all 14 players got into the match for the Tar Heels. North Carolina will next travel to Evanston, Illinois on Sept. 19-20 to face Chicago State, Northwestern, and third ranked Florida.
"Now we are going to prepare for this weekend," said Sagula. "We have to keep focusing on one match at a time and that is what we are going to try and do."
