CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team shut out Old Dominion 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The No. 2 Tar Heels improved to 7-0, while the No. 5 Lady Monarchs fell to 4-3.
Carey Fetting-Smith, a junior from Baltimore, scored twice, both times on penalty corners. Her goals were on straight shots, assisted by junior Katy Potter on the push-in and junior Laura Douglas on the stick stop. Junior Kelsey Keeran scored an unassisted goal late in the first half, then assisted on the team's fourth goal, by freshman Laree Beans early in the second half.
ODU had nine corners to seven by UNC. The Lady Monarchs were averaging three goals per game coming into Saturday's contest, but were shut out for the first time since September of 2002, when Carolina won 2-0 in last year's game at Henry Stadium.
Coach Karen Shelton had praise for the Tar Heels' defense efforts, which earned the team its fourth shutout in seven games. "I'm delighted with the development of our defense," she said. "The three backs (Fetting-Smith, Ashley Judge and Brooke Miller) and Naomi Weatherald and the midfield line are all playing much better defense. I can tolerate some of the lapses we had on attack because of how well we played on defense. I'm very pleased with the way we're coming together as a unit."
The Tar Heels return to action Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. game against No. 13 Virginia at Henry Stadium. The game is season's designated non-conference meeting with the Cavaliers.
Old Dominion plays at No. 4 Duke Sunday. Gametime is 1 p.m. at Williams Field.
