CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 4 North Carolina men's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season Sunday with a 1-0 loss to No. 17 Virginia at Klöckner Stadium. The Tar Heels fall to 5-1-1 and 0-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with the defeat, while the Cavaliers improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the ACC.
Mike Littlefield's goal just before halftime was all the offense the Cavaliers needed, as Carolina was shutout for the first time this season. Littlefield scored in the 44th minute off a cross from Joe Vide, who sent a ball from the right flank to the far post, where Littlefield headed it out of the reach of Tar Heel keeper Ford Williams and into the net. The goal was the second of the week for Littlefield, who also had the lone goal in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Mt. St. Mary's.
North Carolina came close to tying the game in the 57th minute, but junior Marcus Storey's apparent game-tying goal was called off due to offsides. Storey is the ACC's leading scorer with five goals on the season.
Williams made four saves in goal for Carolina, while Virginia's Ryan Best made three saves to post his second consecutive shutout. The Cavaliers outshot the Tar Heels, 11-10, in the contest.
The Tar Heels continue ACC play Wednesday when they host Duke at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field, where Carolina is 2-0 this season.
