North Carolina and NC State meet for the 93rd time on Saturday, September 27 at 2 p.m. at Carter-Finley Stadium. The in-state rivalry will be televised on a pay-per-view basis via Time Warner Cable in the Triangle area, Greensboro and Charlotte.
Carolina has won eight of the last 10 meetings between the two schools and has not lost at Carter-Finley Stadium since 1991. The Tar Heels are coming off a hard-fought 38-27 loss at Wisconsin last week and have started 0-3 for the second time in the last three years. Carolina also started 0-3 in 2001, John Bunting's first year as head coach, but rebounded to win eight of its last 10 games, including a 16-10 win over Auburn in the Peach Bowl. Carolina began its turnaround that season with a 41-9 win over No. 6 Florida State, followed by a 17-9 win at NC State.
"I certainly will remind our team about the 2001 season," said Bunting. "I remember the NC State game as probably the most important win we had that year."
Carolina has not started a season 0-4 since losing its first six games of the year in Mack Brown's first season in 1988.
