CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Jamie Watson scored on a header at the 75:59 mark to lead the No. 8 North Carolina men's soccer team to 1-0 victory over Harvard Sunday at Fetzer Field. With the victory, the Tar Heels (7-1-1, 1-1-0 ACC) improve to 4-0 at home this season.
Carolina's three members of the U.S. Under-17 National Team combined to score the goal, as Michael Harrington dribbled through the middle of the field, then served the ball to Corey Ashe on the right. Ashe then crossed the ball to the far post, where Watson headed the ball past Harvard keeper Ryan Johnson for the 1-0 UNC lead. The score was Watson's third of the season to rank second on the Carolina squad. He also leads the Tar Heels with two game-winning goals this season.
The one score enough for a Carolina victory, as Harvard (3-2-2) managed just three shots in the game and none on goal. The Tar Heels took 14 shots. Ford Williams earned his fourth third shutout of the season without registering a save. Johnson made three saves for the Crimson and allowed one goal.
With Sunday's victory, UNC moves to 5-1 in one-goal games this season. As a team, Carolina has four shutouts in nine matches.
UNC returns to action Tuesday at George Mason at 7 p.m. The Tar Heels' next home contest is Sunday, Oct. 5 against No. 1 Maryland.
