BURLINGTON, Vt. - Junior forward Marcus Storey scored for the the third consecutive game as the No. 8 North Carolina men's soccer team defeated New Hampshire, 3-0, Friday at the Smith Barney Soccer Classic at Vermont's Centennial Field. Senior co-captain Sean McGinty and freshman Ted Odgers also found the back of the net for the 3-0 Tar Heels.
Carolina, who defeated a pair of the nation's top-10 teams a week ago, wasted no time getting on the board against the Wildcats (2-1), as McGinty tallied a goal just 1:58 into the contest. He scored on a header off a corner kick by junior Ray Fumo. Classmate Tim Merritt was also credited with an assist on the score.
Storey, who earned Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors after posting seven points last weekend, then added an unassisted score at the 23:15 mark to give Carolina a 2-0 margin at the half. Storey, who scored eight goals a year ago, already has four this season.
Odgers put the game away at the 58:25 mark with his first collegiate goal, a blast from 25 yards.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ford Williams led the Tar Heels to their second consecutive shutout with four saves in 90 minutes in goal. The win marked Williams' 2003 debut as he missed the first two games of the season due to commitments with the U.S. Under-20 National Team.
Carolina, who can post its first 4-0 start since 1987 with a victory Sunday, outshot New Hampshire, 19-11. The Tar Heels face tournament host Vermont at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
