BURLINGTON, Vt. - Vermont senior Matt Chavez scored with 4:47 left in regulation to lift the Catamounts (0-2-2) to a 1-1 come-from-behind tie with the No. 8 North Carolina men's soccer team at the Smith Barney Soccer Classic at Centennial Field Sunday. Despite the tie, the Tar Heels (3-0-1) went 1-0-1 in the tournament to claim the title.
Freshman Corey Ashe put Carolina, who is unbeaten after four games for the first time since 1991, ahead, 1-0, just after halftime. At the 46:36 mark, Vermont had trouble clearing the ball in front on its own goal, and Carolina freshman Jamie Watson sent the ball to Ashe, who was open on the left side of the cage and scored.
The Tar Heels could not hold the lead, as Chavez knotted the score at the 85:13 mark. Vermont's Tony Anderson collected the ball off a defender and passed to Chavez, who put the ball in the low left corner of the net from 10 yards out.
oth teams had chances to break the tie in the two overtime periods but neither team was able to capitalize.
North Carolina goalkeeper Ford Williams went all 110 minutes in goal, making four saves and allowing the one goal. UVM's David Sullivan also went the distance and made seven saves. Carolina outshot the Catamounts, 15-12.
Williams was one of three Tar Heels named to the all-tournament team. He was joined on the squad by senior co-captain Grant Porter and junior forward Marcus Storey, who was named the event's Offensive Most Valuable Player. After scoring four goals in the first three games of the season, Storey was held scoreless for the first time this season Sunday.
The Tar Heels host the 2003 Nike Carolina Classic at Fetzer Field next weekend. Carolina plays Michigan at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 12, followed by a 2:30 p.m. meeting with Virginia Commonwealth on Sept. 14. UNC Greensboro rounds out the four-team field.
