UNC Men's Swimmers Beat Penn State, Fall To Harvard

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's swimming and diving team split dual meets Saturday afternoon with Penn State and Harvard at Koury Natatorium while the 15th-ranked Penn State women handed the No. 13 Tar Heel women a close loss in dual meet action. In the women's action, the Nittany Lions built up a strong early lead and then held off a late Tar Heel rally to win 157.5-142.5. UNC's No. 21 men were upset by Harvard157-143 but the Tar Heels did gain the 499th dual meet win in school history with a 172-128 victory over Penn State.
With the victory the No. 15 Penn State women improved to 5-1 on the season while the Tar Heel women fell to 4-2. Harvard's men improved to 4-0 with their win over Carolina while the Tar Heel men are now 4-3 with the split and Penn State fell to 2-5 with the loss to the Tar Heels.
The Tar Heels trailed Penn State for most of the men's meet as the Nittany Lions won seven of the first 11 events as Todd Minnier posted four wins and Dan Velez three wins for Penn State. But UNC rallied by outscoring the Nittany Lions 16-3 in the 500-yard freestyle, the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley and 15-2 in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the meet ended to win pulling away.
Josh Glasco had a pair of individual wins in the victory over the Nittany Lions as he swept both butterfly events. Yuri Suguiyama won both the 500 and 1000-yard freestyles versus Penn State and was on UNC's winning 400 free relay team. Eddy Matkovic took one individual win and one relay win in the triumph over Penn State.
The UNC versus Harvard men's meet came down to the final event with the Crimson carrying a 144-139 lead over the Tar Heels into the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Crimson's relay of Davide Cromwell, Kemi George, Andrew Krna and Mark Knepley won the relay in 3:02.26 to claim the meet victory. Cromwell had four wins for Harvard as he swam on both winning relays and also won both backstroke events. Suguiyama had three freestyle wins in the UNC versus Harvard matchup for the Tar Heels. Rassan Grant was part of three wins for the Crimson and UNC's Josh Glasco swept both butterfly events.
In the women's meet, Penn State won nine events to seven for North Carolina and that was enough for the Nittany Lions to eke out the close win. UNC's Jessi Perruquet was part of four wins as she swept the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyles and also was a part of Carolina's winning 400 free relay team. Margy Keefe led the Nittany Lions with wins in the 500 and 1000-yard freestyles.
