CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Jessi Perruquet and sophomore Lizzy Bruce each won four events to power the No. 15 North Carolina women's swimming and diving team to a 209-91 victory over Clemson Sunday afternoon at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium while the No. 22 Tar Heel men's team used its depth to forge a 150-150 tie in its meet with the Tigers despite Clemson winning more individual events in the meet. The tie was the first in Carolina history dating back to 1938.
The Carolina women won 14 of 16 events in recording an easy victory over Clemson. UNC improved to 5-2 overall with the victory and is now 3-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference dual meets. Perruquet and Bruce were both part of four wins. Each swam on the winning 400-yard medley relay and Perruquet also had a relay win on the 400-yard freestyle relay. Bruce individually took top honors in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley and Perruquet had wins in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. Senior Lindsay Waddell swept both diving events for Carolina. The Clemson women fell to 9-4 overall and 0-3 in the ACC with the loss.
In the men's meet, UNC won only seven of the meet's 16 events but its depth in the distance freestyle events helped it accumulate enough points to forge a 150-150 tie with Clemson. The Clemson men are now 11-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the ACC while the Tar Heel men are 4-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the ACC. Yuri Suguiyama had a tremendous meet for Carolina as the senior won the 200-yard, 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle events. UNC's other winners were Eddy Matkovich in the 100-yard butterfly, Patrick Woodruff in the 200-yard breaststroke, Eric Poitras in three-meter diving and Josh Glasco in the 200-yard butterfly.
Carolina first began swimming in 1938. It took 671 meets before the first tie was recorded. UNC is now 499-171-1 in dual meet action.
oth the Tar Heel men and women will host Johns Hopkins Wednesday at Koury Natatorium at 3 p.m.
