Three Tar Heels Advance To Round Of 16 At ACC Indoors

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - North Carolina has advanced three of nine players to the Round of 16 of the Atlantic Coast Conference Coaches Indoor Championships Friday at the Leighton Indoor Tennis Center at Wake Forest University as Nick Monroe, Brad Pomeroy and Derek Porter all made it to the third round.
Monroe, the tournament's top seed in singles, received a first-round bye, before outlasting Joe Bates of the host Demon Deacons 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in the second round. Porter and Pomeroy, both sophomores, advanced with a pair of wins on Friday. Porter defeated Peter Shults of Duke in a come-from-behind first-round win by 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and then whipped Chris Gonyer of Virginia 6-3, 6-3. Pomeroy defeated Virginia's Burak Ahmed 6-4, 6-3 and then downed Andre Iriarte of NC State 5-7, 7-6, 6-2.
Senior Andy Metzler advanced to the second round by beating Marko Miklo of Virginia 7-5, 6-4 in the first round but he fell to No. 3 seed Mat Cloer of Florida State 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. Sophomore Raian Luchici received a first-round bye but fell to Rylan Rizza of Virginia 7-6, 6-4 in the second round.
Four Tar Heels fell in first-round matches. Senior Ben Aiken lost to Christopher Brown of Duke 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Andrew Watkins was a 6-4, 6-2 loser to Will Shaw of NC State and P. J. Petrides was downed by Jason Zimmerman of Duke 6-2, 6-2. Carolina's Jonathan Janda was downed by Darrin Cohen of Virginia 7-6, 6-4.
