Greensboro, N.C. - The Florida State Seminoles have been selected as the top pick for the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference softball season, as determined by a vote of the league's six head coaches.
The Seminoles, who captured the 2003 ACC title, were a unanimous first-place selection. Florida State returns seven position players, two starting pitchers and 16 letterwinners from a squad that went undefeated in conference play (8-0) last season and 46-11 overall.
Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Virginia rank second in the preseason poll, with identical point totals (23). The Yellow Jackets finished last season with a 38-25 mark, while the Tar Heels and Cavaliers posted 40-22-1 and 37-26 overall records, respectively.
The Tar Heels returnees include senior shortstop Emily Price along with sophomore pitcher Crystal Cox, the 2003 ACC Rookie of the Year and first baseman Jaclyn Holden, a 2003 All-ACC selection. The Tar Heels start the 2004 season on Feb. 8 by hosting South Carolina at the UNC Softball Complex.
Completing the poll in order of projected finish are Maryland (15) and ACC newcomer NC State (6).
