UNC Women's Golf Finishes Sixth at the Franklin Street Partners Invitational

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The North Carolina men's golf team came away from this year's Franklin Street Partners Invitational with a team championship and individuals placing second and third. The Tar Heels fired a third round score of 276 to give them a final team score of 25-under-par 839. Georgia Southern finished second with a 19-under-par 285.
"Our guys really stepped up this week," said North Carolina head coach John Inman. "They played the way they know how to play this golf course. There were a lot of birdies being made out there and it was good to come out on top."
The Tar Heels were in the third position after the first round and worked their way to the top of the leader board with major contributions from each of their four golfers.
"Everybody chipped in this week and that's what it takes," said Inman. "It takes four really good scores a day. We counted a lot of scores under par and it was good to see those red numbers."
After leading the first day, Virginia dropped to third place in the final standings with a score of 859.
Georgia Southern's David Palm claimed the individual title by carding a third-round score of 69 for a tournament total 207. Carolina's Martin Ureta finished one stoke behind Palm with a nine-under-par total of 208. Tar Heel junior Jonathan Jackson rounded out the top three with a seven-under par 209. Four Carolina golfers finished in the top 15 to help the Tar Heels to victory.
Ureta had seven birdies in the final round of play to give him a four-under-par 68 and a runner-up title at this year's Franklin Street Partners Invitational.
"My short game is awesome right now," said Ureta. "I hit the ball very well in the first round but scored a 73. When my short game was on the last two days, I shot 67 and 68. Every time I was in trouble I was able to chip in or make par."
The North Carolina men's golf team returns to action on October 17 at Duke Golf Club for the Duke Golf Classic.
The Duke women claimed their eighth straight title at Finley Golf Course with a third round score of 293 for a total of 865. Auburn finished second with a ten-over-par final score of 874. The Tar Heels finished sixth after carding a score of 319 in the third round for a tournament total of 930.
"We're capable of much better," said Carolina head coach Sally Austin. "Our goal is to get better every day and I don't think that we showed that today. We've got some work to do. But, I know we can do it. These girls are quite capable of doing a lot better than we did and I think they know that."
Auburn's Maria Martinez claimed the individual championship with a four-under-par tournament total of 212. Duke's Brittany Lang finished one stroke behind Martinez with a 213 to claim second place. After leading the first two rounds of the tournament, Duke's Elizabeth Janangelo dropped to third place with a two-over-par score of 74 in the third round, giving her a tournament total of 214.
Katie Miller led the way for the Tar Heels finishing 12th overall. Romi Irons moved up three spots to finish 24th after carding a 75 in the final round of play.
"I'm looking forward to our next tournament and want to get this one behind us," said coach Austin. "It's not fun to play this poorly on your home course."
The North Carolina women's golf team returns to action October 29, when they travel to Destin, Fla., for the ACC/SEC Challenge to be held at Sandestin Golf Resort.
