Chapel Hill, N.C. - For the second consecutive year the North Carolina men's golf team will head into the final round of the Franklin Street Partners Invitational in first place. In Saturday's second round, the Tar Heels shot a 13-under-par 275, for a total of 563 after Friday's even par 288.
"We capitalized on our opportunities today and it shows," said Carolina Head Coach John Inman. "The guys were loose and focused and that made good things happen for us."
Georgia Southern finished the day in second place with a score of 279. The Eagles remain one stoke behind the Tar Heels with a total score of 564 heading into the final round of play. Virginia slipped down two spots to the number three position after shooting a second round score of 285.
Three Tar Heel golfers finished the second round in the top ten of the individual race. Junior walk-on Jonathan Jackson, from Chapel Hill, N.C., and sophomore Martin Ureta, of Santiago, Chile, both fired an impressive five-under-par 67 to lead the team. Senior Matt Crenshaw also finished the day under par by shooting a two-under 70.
Jackson made seven birdies on the day and is currently tied for third place with a total score of 138. He came out strong after starting his round on the tenth hole.
"I felt really comfortable out there," said Jackson. "After I made a 25-footer for birdie on the eleventh and a 15-footer for birdie on the 12th, I started to feel real comfortable."
Coach John Inman was pleased with his team's hard play after the second round and hopes they can stay relaxed and keep up the consistency.
"I'm going to stress that they have fun tomorrow," said Inman. "The best thing our guys can do is stay loose and go out and play golf. This is our home course and we should be able to do that here. I want the guys to enjoy the 13-under today, but remember that there's still a day to play."
Rhys Davies, of East Tennessee State, leads all individuals after carding a 69 in the second round for an eight-under-par tournament total of 136. Charlotte's Ray Sheedy trails Davis by a stroke with seven-under-par tournament total of 137. Aaron Price of Georgia Southern fired the low score of the day with a seven-under-par 65.
Duke maintains their lead in the women's tournament by 13 strokes with a total score of 572 after two rounds of play. The Blue Devils shot an impressive ten-under-par as a team in the second round to make them the only team under par at four-under. Auburn currently holds the second place position with a nine-over-par 585.
The North Carolina women dropped one spot to the sixth position with a second round score of 307 for a total of 611. The Heels were dealt a tough blow when junior Beth Marushak had to withdraw due to back problems.
"It's hard for any team to lose one of their top players," said sophomore Katie Miller. "Now we don't have the luxury to throw a score away. But we can recover. With some low scores tomorrow we can move up a few spots."
Duke's Elizabeth Janangelo leads all individuals after shooting a four-under-par 68, giving her a tournament total of 140. Auburn's Maria Martinez trails Janangelo in second place by one stroke.
Katie Miller led the Tar Heels in the second round with an even par 72. After two days of play Miller is tied for fifth place with Texas' Lisa Ferrero at a total score of 145. Freshman Ann Laney and junior Romi Irons both carded a 76 for the Tar Heels in round two. Miller will look to keep improving her putting in the final day of competition and hopes to keep moving up the leader board.
"I'm comfortable with this course and have played really well in practice," said Miller. "I just need to keep in mind the things I've done well before and get a few more putts to drop."
The Franklin Street Partners Invitational will resume on Sunday with a shotgun start beginning at 9:15 a.m. The tournament is open to the public and there is not admission fee.
