BLACKSBURG, Va. - On the strength of goals from sophomore Jamie Watson and senior Ray Fumo, the North Carolina men's soccer team (6-6-2, 2-2-0 ACC) extended its season-best three-match winning streak with a 2-1 win at Virginia Tech (7-7-0, 1-3-0 ACC) Wednesday.
Watson, who is now fourth on the team with four goals, got UNC on the board at the 42:40 mark with a shot from the top of the box. He found himself facing four Virginia Tech defenders in front of him, but fired off the shot and found a seam, beating Hokie goalie Chase Harrison. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.
The Tar Heels struck again at the 53:26 mark when Ray Fumo beat Harrison for UNC's second goal. Fumo, in a crowd from about 10 yards out, fired off the shot and found the back of the net through Tech's defense. The goal was Fumo's first of the season.
The score remained 2-0 until the 85th minute when Tech pushed forward and Eric Vickers scored. Vickers beat UNC goalie Ford Williams for the score. The goal was Vickers' second of the season.
Williams went all 90 minutes in goal and registered two saves for the Tar Heels. Harrison halted four shots for the Hokies. Both teams took 12 shots.
The Tar Heels return to action against rival NC State at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fetzer Field.
