The University of North Carolina volleyball team rolled past in-state foe Davidson College Tuesday night at Carmichael Auditorium in three games, 30-21, 30-17, 30-16. Junior outside hitter Dani Nyenhuis led the attack by recording 16 kills and not committing an error for a career-best .696 hitting percentage. Senior Norma Cortez started at setter and contributed 40 assists and four blocks.
Carolina (13-11) looked sluggish for most of game one, while the hustling defensive effort and strong serving of Davidson (9-18) kept it close. Nyenhuis continued her recent outstanding play on offense, leading the Tar Heels with 10 kills on 13 errorless swings for a .769 hitting percentage. With Carolina leading by four at 24-20, senior Jayme Mitchell served five straight points to get to game point. After a Wildcat side out, sophomore Emily Guerry put down a kill to win it, 30-21.
The Tar Heels were more fundamentally sound in game two, as they overcame their early passing woes to cruise to a 30-17 win. Nyenhuis again played errorless volleyball, collecting six kills on 10 swings. Freshman Christie Clark, who got her first career start in the match, teamed up with sophomore Emily Guerry and junior Camilla Ihenetu to provide a solid front at the net. The trio combined for 10 kills and 2.5 blocks in the game.
UNC proved to be the superior team in game three and won going away, 30-16, to clinch the match in three games. The Tar Heels continued to dominate at the net, outblocking the Wildcats nine to one. Clark led the way with one solo and five assists and finished the match with 11 total blocks, the most for any Carolina player this season.
Carolina will play another non-conference match Friday night against an unlikely opponent - the Duke Blue Devils. The two teams will meet for the second time this season, but Friday's match has been designated a non-conference match that will not count toward each team's 16 ACC matches.
