DESTIN, FLA.- After sitting in eleventh place on day one of the ACC/SEC Challenge, the Tar Heels got a boost from senior Laura Caniff and freshman Ann Laney to help move up three spots into eighth place. Caniff and Laney each shot one-over par 72s and were the key contributors to Carolina's six stroke improvement in the second round. Their strong play helped move the team within only five strokes of the top five. Caniff also rose into a tie for 16th and will be looking for her first top-20 finish of the year.
First round co-leader Auburn holds a commanding 15-stroke lead after a record setting second round. Three of the Tiger's four scores were under-par leading to a tournament record 271, thirteen strokes under par. Diana Ramage led the way for Auburn breaking another tournament record with a seven-under 64. She holds a four stroke lead going into Sunday's final round.
Fellow ACC schools Duke and Wake Forest help round out the tournament's top-five with Mississippi State and LSU of the SEC. Carolina is the third ACC school in the standings, ahead of Florida State, Miami and first-day co-leader Viriginia.
Sunday's final round will be a 8 a.m. shotgun start at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Fla.
