CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's soccer team (8-7-2, 3-3-0 ACC) surrendered a pair of second half goals and saw its season-best five match winning streak come to an end with a 2-0 loss to No. 9 Wake Forest (11-3-1, 5-1-0 ACC) Sunday at Fetzer Field. The Demon Deacons, who are now alone in first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings, have won eight straight games.
Senior forward Scott Sealy put the Deacs up 1-0 just a minute into the second half. After Amir Lowery served the ball into the box, Sealy turned and fired a six-yard shot into the lower left corner of the net past UNC goalkeeper Ford Williams. The score at the 46:04 mark was Sealy's team-best 13th goal of the season.
Sophomore Corey Ashe nearly netted the equalizer for the Tar Heels in the 54th minute when he blasted a shot off the near post. Marcus Storey and Jamie Watson set up the scoring chance for Ashe.
Just over 15 minutes after its first score, Wake Forest pushed its advantage to 2-0 on a Stephen Keel goal at 61:13. Keel streaked down the left side of the field and collected a feed from sophomore Ryan Solle in the box. He then sent the ball towards the far post and past a diving Williams for his second goal of the year.
Thanks to strong defensive efforts on both sides of the ball, neither team was able to scratch in the first half. The Demon Deacons outshot the Tar Heels, 5-3, and the Tar Heels' Williams made three saves in the opening frame. Williams' leaping save of a Lowery shot in the 26th minute thwarted the Deacons' best first half scoring opportunity. Williams, who went the distance in goal for Carolina, finished with five saves on the afternoon.
The loss was Carolina first to Wake Forest at home since 1982 and the first this season since a 1-0 defeat at Maryland on October 10. The Tar Heels conclude their regular season home slate with a 5-3-1 mark.
Carolina seniors Ray Fumo, Tim Merritt, Andrew Rhea and Storey were honored before the game, which was their last at Fetzer Field as Tar Heels. Carolina closes out the 2004 regular season at Clemson on Sunday, November 7.
