CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Corey Ashe, Marcus Storey and Tim Merritt each scored first-half goals to lead the North Carolina men's soccer team (3-5-2, 1-1-0 ACC) to a 3-0 victory over UNC Asheville (4-4-1, 3-0-0 Big South) Wednesday at Fetzer Field. The three goals scored marked a season-high for the Tar Heels, who snapped a two-match losing streak.
After UNC keeper Ford Williams halted a penalty kick by the Bulldogs' Jordan Holthouser in the seventh minute, the Tar Heels scored twice in a four-minute span to claim an early 2-0 lead. As soon as Ashe put Carolina up 1-0 with his fourth goal of the season at the 7:44 mark, Storey buried a shot from the top of the box in the 12th minute to push the Tar Heel advantage to 2-0. Sophomore Jamie Watson assisted on Ashe's goal, his team-best fourth of the season, while sophomore Ted Odgers and senior Ray Fumo added assists on Storey's score, his third.
Merritt gave the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead at the break with a goal in the final minute of the first half. He deposited a 25-yard shot in the upper-left corner of the net for his second goal in as many games. The Tar Heels outshot the Bulldogs 10-2 in the first half and 14-3 for the match.
Williams went the distance in goal for UNC, recording his first shutout of the year and the 11th of his career. His lone save of the night came on Holdhouser's penalty kick early in the first half.
UNCA starting keeper Michael Pereira, who had three saves, also stopped a penalty kick by the Tar Heels' Michael Harrington in the first half. Ben Saylor entered in goal for the Bulldogs for the final 13 minutes. UNCA recorded three team saves in the match.
With the win, the Tar Heels move to 8-0-0 all-time against the Bulldogs, who have not scored a goal in the series.
Carolina returns to Atlantic Coast Conference action Sunday at No. 25 Maryland. The Tar Heels and Terps are slated to get underway at 2 p.m.
