CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Visiting Miami defeated North Carolina three games to one in an Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball matchup Friday night at Carmichael Auditorium. The Hurricanes took the first game 30-17, the Tar Heels came back for a 30-18 win, then Miami took the final two games, 30-18 and 31-29.
The teams came into the match tied for second place in the ACC standings, but the Hurricanes (15-8 overall, 10-5 ACC) moved ahead with the win. The Tar Heels are now 16-13 overall, 9-6 in the ACC.
Miami, which beat UNC in four games in Coral Gables, Fla., on Oct. 17, led throughout the first game. The Hurricanes claimed the win behind four kills from junior Karla Johnson and three from senior Elizabeth Tyson.
The Tar Heels rebounded to claim the second game, wrapping up the win on a kill by senior Molly Pyles, who had six kills in the game. With the score tied 4-4, UNC went on a 9-3 run to take control and pull away for the victory.
Miami hit .320 to claim the third game as Johnson again led the way with seven kills. The Tar Heels were within one at 15-14 before Miami ran off five straight points. After that, UNC never got closer than five.
The final game was the tightest of the night, with Carolina leading most of the way. Miami didn't take the lead for good until the Hurricanes broke a 29-29 tie for the final two points of the game. Valerie Tipiana had 10 kills in the win.
On the night, Tipiana led the Hurricanes with 21 kills and Johnson had 17 as Miami totaled 63 kills to UNC's 55.
Pyles had 20 kills for UNC, junior Dani Nyenhuis added 14 and senior Katie Wright 12. Senior Caroline deRoeck, already second on UNC's career digs list, added a team-high 22 to her total and Pyles had 19.
Carolina continues its homestand Saturday with a 6 p.m. game against Florida State. The contest will wrap up the regular season for the Tar Heels, who then look ahead to the ACC Tournament Nov. 18-21 at Virginia. Miami plays at NC State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
