
No. 1 Tar Heels Advance In NCAA Play

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Top-ranked North Carolina defeated No. 10 Richmond 3-0 Saturday afternoon in field hockey action at Francis E. Henry Stadium to advance to the second round of play in the NCAA Championship. The Tar Heels (21-1) will play Duke, a 5-3 winner over Old Dominion in the day's second game, on Sunday at 2 p.m.
"I'm proud of the team effort we displayed today against against a very strong and well-coached Richmond team," said UNC coach Karen Shelton. "Today's victory wasn't easily won - we had to earn it."
The game remained scoreless through most of the first half before the Tar Heels got on the board with 2:43 to play in the period On the team's third penalty corner of the half sophomore Brooke Miller deflected a shot by Laura Douglas into the goal from the left side of the net to put UNC up 1-0 at halftime.
UNC's second goal of the game came with 19:59 remaining when Douglas took a pass from senior Carey Fetting-Smith and blasted a shot past Richmond goalkeeper Michelle Swartz.
The Tar Heels added a third with 6:54 to play. On the second penalty corner of the half, senior Kerry Falgowski got her stick on a shot by Fetting-Smith and deflected it up and into the net from in front of the goal.
"I thought we had a good gameplan the first half," said Richmond coach Ange Bradley, whose team finished the season 18-3. "The second half, Carolina just stepped it up a notch. It was a good opportunity for our kids to experience that speed and pressure. I thought our kids played hard, worked hard, and I think we gave Carolina a little bit more than they expected. "
Carolina had 17 shots to five by the Spiders. Penalty corners were more equal, with seven by the Tar Heels and five by Richmond. RU goalkeeper Michelle Swartz had seven saves on the day, while the North Carolina goalkeepers, Katy Tran for the first 64 minutes and Marie Bounds for the final six, had one save each.
