Carolina's 109-60 win over Loyola Sunday was its biggest of the season and marked the Tar Heels' largest margin of victory since a 49-point victory over Buffalo (98-49) on Dec. 8, 1998. The 109 points were also a season-best and were the most since scoring 114 in last season's triple overtime loss to Wake Forest on Dec. 20, 2003. Carolina has now broken the 100-point barrier twice this season (106 vs. Iowa).
Following a season-opening loss to Santa Clara, the Tar Heels have now won seven straight games to improve to 7-1. Carolina last won seven straight games during an 18-game winning streak in the 2000-01 season.
Carolina's 63 first half points were a season-best and the most for the Tar Heels since scoring 68 in the opening half versus George Mason last season. Carolina has now scored 50 or more first half points in four of its eight games this season.
The Tar Heels went 23 of 34 (67.6 percent) from the field in the first half, which marked a season-best. Carolina shot 57.6 percent (38-66) for the game.
With 109 points against the Ramblers Saturday, Carolina has now scored 90 or more points in five of its last six games. The Tar Heels have also scored at least 85 points in six of its last seven games.
The Tar Heels did not trail at any point versus Loyola and have not trailed at any point in each of the last two games and in five of the last seven. Carolina last trailed in its win at Indiana.
With five first half assists, junior Raymond Felton became the ninth Tar Heel to eclipse the 500-assist mark. He finished the game with seven assists and now has 503 in his career to tie for eighth on the all-time Carolina list with Steve Hale.
Led by senior Jawad Williams' 17 points, Carolina had six players in double figures for the first time since the Jan. 24, 2004, Virginia game. Marvin Williams and Rashad McCants each scored 16, while Sean May had 15. Raymond Felton added 12 points, and senior Melvin Scott chipped in with 11. In all, 11 different Tar Heels scored in the win.
Freshman Marvin Williams scored a career-best 16 points and added nine rebounds Sunday versus Loyola.
Junior Rashad McCants was 4 of 6 from three-point range and has now hit a three-pointer in 23 consecutive games. He has hit at least one in all eight games this season and the final 15 of the 2003-04 season. This season, McCants has connected on at least three three-pointers in seven of the Tar Heels' eight games.
Over the last three games, McCants has hit on 13 of 21 (61.9 percent) three-point attempts.
Junior Sean May set a career best with six assists versus Loyola. His previous career-high was four set against Illinois last season and equaled in last Saturday's win over Kentucky. May now has 10 assists over the last two games.
With three rebounds Sunday, Jawad Williams now has 500 in his UNC career.
