Softball Names 2005 Captains

CHAPEL HILL -- Pitchers Ashley Allen and Crystal Cox have been named the team captains for the 2005 Carolina softball team, head coach Donna J. Papa announced Wednesday. Allen, a senior from Houston, Texas, was 3-0 last year in 12 appearances with a 2.16 ERA. Cox, a junior from Harrisburg, N.C., led the team in wins (23), ERA (1.64) and strikeouts (297), and established single-season school records for strikeouts and complete games (31).
"Crystal Cox and Ashley Allen are great choices as captains for our 2005 team," Coach Papa said. "They have emerged as leaders and are well-respected by their teammates. They each possess an excellent work ethic that is evident on the practice field on a daily basis. Crystal and Ashley both bring positive attitudes to the field and have the ability to keep the team functioning as a unit."
The Tar Heels are coming off a 44-22 season in which they advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year.
