Tar Heels Split First Day of Florida State Invitational

Tallahassee, Fla. - The North Carolina Softball team split their first two games of the Florida State Invitational on Friday as they shutout St. Louis 3-0 and fell to Florida A&M 2-0. Crystal Cox tied a career high by striking out 13 batters in the win over St. Louis as she pitched seven shutout innings. The Tar Heels face Nebraska and Penn State on Saturday as they continue pool play.
Against St. Louis, the Tar Heels scored all their runs in the top of the first inning. Natashalyn Snipes singled with one out and was followed by a walk by Emily Price. Jessica Young scored Snipes with a RBI single to make the score 1-0. Julia Bove pinch ran for Young and stole second that caused a throwing error which allowed Price to score to make it 2-0. Anna Evans followed with a single to right field that scored Bove.
UNC would lead 3-0 for the rest of the game as Cox dominated from the mound. Cox allowed just four hits and two walks in the shutout win. She improves to 9-5 on the season and lowered her season ERA to under 2.00.
In the 2-0 loss to Florida A&M, Carolina stranded nine runners on base as they had six hits, two walks and reached on an error but were unable to cross home plate. Alison Yin pitched seven strong innings allowing two runs on nine hits and walking none.
UNC faces Penn State on Saturday at 10 a.m. and follows with a matchup against Nebraska at noon. UNC is currently 16-11 on the season.
