
Tar Heels Defeat Ohio State, 16-8, in Aeropostale Women's Lacrosse Challenge

CHAPEL HILL - Melissa McCarthy had four goals and one assist as the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team defeated Ohio State, 16-8, in the Aeropostale Women's Lacrosse Challenge on Friday evening at Henry Stadium. Brooke Dieringer had three goals and an assist for UNC, while Beth Ames and Allison Higgins also both had three goals.
UNC, ranked No. 14 in the nation this week, improves to 5-3 with the victory. No. 18 Ohio State drops to 3-4 with the loss.
McCarthy, Ames, Dieringer, and Higgins all scored two goals in the first half as the Tar Heels led, 8-4, at the break. Carolina scored six straight goals to start the second half and cruised to the win. Jess Allen, Ilsa Leon and Kelly Renzi each scored late goals for the Tar Heels.
In Friday's first game, No. 8 Maryland (6-2) scored seven consecutive goals to turn a 7-4 deficit into an 11-7 lead and held on to defeat No. 20 Penn State (1-6), 12-11. Acacia Walker had three goals and Annie Collins, Krista Pellizzi, Kelly Coppedge and Mollie Reese had two goals apiece for Maryland. Lori Havrilla led Penn State with three goals and two assists.
The Aeropostale Women's Lacrosse Challenge will conclude on Sunday when Maryland plays Ohio State at 1 p.m. and Carolina faces Penn State at 3 p.m.
