CHAPEL HILL - Allison Higgins and Beth Ames each had hat tricks as the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team defeated Penn State, 13-4, in the Aeropostale Women's Lacrosse Challenge on Sunday afternoon at Henry Stadium. Melissa McCarthy and Stephanie Scuarachio each had two goals for the Tar Heels, while Brooke Dieringer had a goal and two assists.
UNC, ranked No. 14 in the nation this week, improves to 6-3 with the victory. No. 20 Penn State drops to 1-7 with the loss.
Freshman Kristen Hordy played very well in the goal, playing all 60 minutes and recording a school-record 20 saves, stopping several free position attempts and playing one of her best games as a Tar Heel. Hordy held Penn State to 2 of 9 on free position shot attempts. The previous UNC record for goals in a game was 19, set by Melissa Coyne vs. Dartmouth in 2000.
Ames got the Tar Heels off to a very quick start, scoring on a breakaway just 0:20 into the game off the opening draw. It took Carolina more than 10 minutes to score its next goal when Higgins scored off a Chrissy Rude assist at 11:28. Higgins had three of UNC's first five goals as the Tar Heels grabbed a 5-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game and later led, 7-3, at halftime.
In the second half, Penn State's Emily Chambers scored 1:57 into the second half to pull the Nittany Lions to within 7-4, but Carolina scored the last six goals of the game to pull away late in the contest.
In Sunday's first game, No. 8 Maryland (7-2) got five goals from Kelly Coppedge and a goal and four assists from Annie Collins in a 14-4 win over No. 18 Ohio State (3-5).
The Tar Heels will return to action with a pair of road games next weekend at Temple on Friday afternoon and at Georgetown on Sunday afternoon.
