UNC Women's Golf In Second Place At ACC Tournament

CLEMMONS, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team shot a one-over-par 285 in the first round of the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference at Salem Glen Country Club on Friday. UNC is in second place, six strokes back of leader Duke, who finished the round at five-under 279.
Wake Forest shot a six-over 290 for third place. Florida State, NC State, Maryland and Virginia round out the current team standings.
Carolina senior Meaghan Francella leads the individual race after shooting a five-under 66 for a one-stroke lead. Francella is defending her title after winning the individual ACC championship in 2003.
Duke's Brittany Lang is on Francella's tail, one stroke back in second place at four-under 67. Tar Heel senior Ashley Prange carded a two-under 69, good for third place.
Other Tar Heel rounds include Carolina freshman Katie Miller fired a three-over 74 to put her in a tie for 16th place. Sophomore Beth Marushak shot a five-over 76 for a tie in 20th place. And Sophomore Romi Irons carded a six-over 77 for a tie in 23rd place.
The second round of play begins on Saturday when Maryland and Virginia tee off at 8 a.m. on hole number one. Florida State and NC State tee off at 8:35 a.m. and Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest tee off at 9:10 a.m. Admission is free.
The 16th ACC Championship is being played at Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C. The course is a par 71 and 6,348 yards.
