CHAPEL HILL --North Carolina will hope to solidify its case for an NCAA Tournament bid when it hosts the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament this weekend in Chapel Hill.
No. 4 seed Carolina will face No. 1 seed Duke on Friday at 1 p.m. at Henry Stadium on the UNC campus. The game will be a matchup in the Carlyle Cup, the 23-sport competition between the Tar Heels and Blue Devils. The Tar Heels can gain back 0.5 points in the competition (currently led by Duke, 14-11) with a win on Friday.
The winner of Friday's first semifinal will play the winner of the game between No. 2 seed Virginia and No. 3 seed Maryland in the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Carolina enters the 2004 ACC Tournament with an overall record of 8-6 and an ACC mark of 0-3. Last weekend, the Tar Heels rallied late and played well but lost at Maryland, 11-9. That loss gave UNC the No. 4 seed in the ACC Tournament for the second year in a row.
The Tar Heels won their first-ever ACC championship in 2002 in Durham, N.C.
TAR HEELS TRYING TO KEEP NCAA HOPES ALIVE
Carolina enters the 2004 ACC Tournament with a record of 8-6. The Tar Heels, who have one regular-season game remaining after this weekend's ACC Tournament, hope to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for a seventh time in the last eight seasons.
Carolina finished 7-9 in 2003 and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time in seven years. After this weekend's action, UNC will take a break for final exams and then play at No. 12 Dartmouth on May 8 in Hanover, N.H.
IN THIS WEEK'S IWLCA NATIONAL POLL
Carolina is ranked No. 15 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll, reflecting games played through Sunday, April 18. Other ACC teams in this week's poll include No. 2 Maryland, No. 4 Virginia and No. 7 Duke.
Princeton is ranked No. 1, followed by Maryland, Georgetown, Virginia and Loyola in the top five. The bottom half of the top 10 includes Notre Dame, Duke, James Madison, Johns Hopkins and Vanderbilt.
SUNDAY'S CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WILL BE TELEVISED
