Reid, Waddell, Terry Selected In NFL Draft

Chapel Hill, N.C. ---- University of North Carolina defensive back Dexter Reid became the first Tar Heel selected in the 2004 NFL Draft on Sunday. Reid was picked in the fourth round (113th overall) by the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. Just 11 picks later, cornerback/kick returner Michael Waddell was selected by the Tennessee Titans. Offensive guard Jeb Terry was taken by Tampa Bay in the fifth round.
A native of Norfolk, Va., Reid led the Tar Heels in tackles in each of the last two seasons and was a two-time all-conference selection. Reid earned first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 2002 after leading the league and finishing second in the nation with 13.8 tackles per game (166 total). He was a second-team All-ACC selection in 2003, leading the team with 132 tackles.
Waddell, a native of Ellerbe, N.C., was one of the fastest defensive players avaialable in the draft, clocking a 4.3 at UNC's Pro Timing Day in March. Waddell led the nation in kickoff returns, averaging 31.7 per return. He also finished the 2003 season with 18 tackles and two pass breakups. Waddell earned second-team All-ACC honors in 2001 and his 36 pass breakups ranks second in school history.
Terry is the first UNC offensive lineman taken in the NFL Draft since Brian Bollinger was picked by San Francisco in the third round in 1992. A native of Dallas, Texas, Terry earned second-team All-ACC honors this season as the Tar Heels rushed for over 150 yards per game, the most since 1995.
Carolina is the only ACC school to have at least one player selected in every NFL Draft since 1971.
