CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina junior right fielder Marshall Hubbard has been named to the first watch list for the 2004 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, which honors the top amateur baseball player in the country. The 30-player list, which is selected by USA Baseball in partnership with the Major League Baseball Players Association, is subject to change based on weekly performance.
A transfer from William & Mary, Hubbard is having an outstanding debut season with the Tar Heels. He leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in runs batted in (1.48 per game) and ranks second in home runs (0.38 per game) and slugging percentage (.727). His season totals of 11 homers and 43 RBI lead the Tar Heels and he is batting .327 on the year.
USA Baseball will announce its five finalists for the 2004 Golden Spikes Award in June. Hubbard is one of six ACC players to make the list. Past winners of the award include current Major Leaguers Mark Prior, Pat Burrell, J.D. Drew, Jason Varitek and Robin Ventura.
