Carolina Men's Tennis Blanks S.C. State 4-0 In NCAA First Round

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team, the tournament's 11th seed, handled South Carolina State with a 4-0 NCAA first-round victory on Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Senior Nick Monroe garnered his 97th career singles win, putting him at second on Carolina's all-time singles victory list.
In the first ever meeting between the two schools, Carolina took the doubles point from the Bulldogs. Monroe and junior Geoff Boyd, ranked 17th nationally, defeated Jiri Vasicek and Slavko Radman of S.C. State 8-3 at the No. 1 seed. Monroe and Boyd move on to 21-4 in doubles action this season and will appear in the NCAA individual tournament in Tulsa, Okla., with an automatic bid.
To clinch the doubles point for UNC, senior Andy Metzler and sophomore Brad Pomeroy took an 8-4 win over Rodrigo Lama and Andrew Mawire at No. 2 doubles. The tandem is now 9-7 this season.
In singles action, Metzler finished first at the No. 2 seed, beating Vasicek 6-2, 6-1 for UNC's second point. Metzler is now 26-13.
Then, #29 Nick Monroe handled Dragan Bisercic 6-1, 6-1 at the top seed. Monroe moves to 33-8 overall and will compete in the NCAA singles tournament for the second consecutive year. Last year, Monroe played as an alternate while this year, he received an automatic bid.
To clinch the team's victory, UNC sophomore Raian Luchici took Mawire 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 seed. Luchici's singles record is now 27-8.
Carolina, ranked 15th nationally, moves to 23-4 and will face the winner of the Ohio State/South Carolina match on Sunday at 1 p.m. The winner advances to the Final 16 at University of Tulsa in Oklahoma.
In its 14th year of participation, Carolina improves to 8-13 in the NCAA tournament. Sunday's match will conclude the first-ever NCAA regional hosted by UNC men's tennis.
