DENVER - North Carolina junior catcher Chris Iannetta was named one of 30 semifinalists for the 2004 Dick Howser Trophy, presented annually to the top player in college baseball. The list was released by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in association with the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce last Thursday.
Iannetta is having an outstanding season for the Tar Heels, ranking second on the team with a .344 average, 10 home runs and 57 runs batted in. Behind the plate, Iannetta has thrown out 50 percent (21-of-42) of attempted base stealers and picked off nine runners. He has a .987 fielding percentage in a team-high 468 chances.
The membership of the NCBWA will choose the winner based on three rounds of voting. The 2004 winner will be announced at the College World Series on Friday, June 18. The Dick Howser Trophy, given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as college baseball's most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration for the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser's life.
Iannetta is one of three Atlantic Coast Conference players named the semifinal list, joining Clemson's Brad McCann and Virginia's Joe Koshansky.
