UNC Women's Golf Team Finishes In 15th Place At NCAA Championship

OPELIKA, Ala. - In the fourth round of the NCAA Championship, which was halted Friday due to darkness, the UNC women golfers shot their best round as a team for the tournament at 293. However, the Tar Heels' 1197 tournament total placed them 49 strokes behind NCAA champion UCLA. Finishing at 1148 as a team, The Bruins were two strokes better than runner-up Oklahoma State and 11 strokes ahead of third place finisher, Duke University. Rounding out the top five in team competition was California at 1172 and Vanderbilt at 1180.
Sarah Huarte of California won individual medalist honors after a four round total of 10-under-par 278. Karin Sjodin of Oklahoma State finished second at 279 and Susie Mathews and Charlotte Mayorkas of UCLA finished third and fourth with totals of 280 and 284, respectively. Jessica Shepley of Tennessee rounded out the top five at 286 while five golfers tied for sixth at 287 including Virada Nirapathpongporn of Duke.
Meaghan Francella, a senior from Port Chester, N.Y., shot a seven-over-par 79 in the final round leaving her with a 293 four round total and tied for 22nd over all.
After shooting a 79 in the third round, Senior Ashley Prange, from Noblesville, Ind., carded her third even-par 72 for the tournament total of 295. Beth Marushak, a sophomore from Northampton, Pa., finished at 301 and tied for 62nd, freshman Katie Miller, from Jeannette, Pa., finished tied for 110th and sophomore Romi Irons, from Austin, Tex., tied for 120th.
The 2004 NCAA Championship was played at the 72-hole Grand National Lake Course which features a par 72, 6,215-yard layout.
