Raleigh, May 27, 2004 - As part of UNC-Chapel Hill's $500 million capital improvement plans, Woollen Gym - home of the 1957 undefeated NCAA champions men's basketball team - will be renovated. 5,000 square feet of the historic maple flooring from the facility built in 1937 has been salvaged and is for sale to the general public at the Habitat ReUse Center. All proceeds from the sales support Habitat for Humanity of Wake County and the building of safe, affordable housing. The flooring was donated to Habitat by JNR Partners, a local salvage company.
Woollen Gym hosted the Carolina men's home basketball games from 1938 until 1966 including Coach Dean Smith's first four teams (1962-1965). Two-time All American, Billy Cunningham, who led the ACC in scoring as a junior and senior, was the last star player to play in the building; however Woollen has served as the most popular spot for pick-up games on UNC's campus for decades. According to Marty Pomerants, Director of Campus Recreation for UNC, "They've all played here. Michael Jordan used to play pick-up games at Woollen Gym and has been back in recent years to watch his son who participates in summer basketball camps. One time, Jordan was actually kicked out of Woollen after he graduated because he did not have a UNC identification card."
The Habitat ReUse Center supports Habitat for Humanity of Wake County by selling new & used building materials and furniture to the public at discounted prices. All proceeds directly support the building of new Habitat homes. Last year alone, the ReUse Center diverted more than 1,000 tons of good, usable materials from local landfills and funded the building of four Habitat homes. Located at 2400 Alwin Court, just off of Hodges St. between Capital Blvd. & Atlantic Ave., the ReUse Center is open to the public Tuesday - Friday, 10am-6pm and Saturdays 9am-5pm.
