Maryland Downs No. 15 Tar Heels, 3-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - On the strength of 11th-inning run-scoring singles from second baseman Dan Melvin and shortstop Elliot Singletary, Maryland (20-29, 4-17 ACC) scored a 3-1 win over No. 15 North Carolina (34-12, 13-8 ACC) in the final game of a three-game series Sunday at Boshamer Stadium. The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak versus the Terrapins for the Tar Heels, who secured the series with wins Friday and Saturday.
With the game tied at one entering the 11th, center fielder Brian Jarosinski led off the inning with a double off Tar Heel reliever Michael Gross, who took the loss to fall to 3-1 on the year. Jarosinski took third on a single by catcher Jason Maxey before scoring on Melvin's RBI single. Melvin later scored added an insurance run on Singletary's base hit.
Maryland's Ben Pfinsgraff (4-3) allowed three hits over the final 2.2 innings to earn the win. He had the benefit of three double plays behind him, including inning-enders in the ninth and 10th. Carolina had its best chance to win the game in the 10th with runners on first and third with just one out, but shortstop Greg Mangum hit into a 4-6-3 double play to send the game into the 11th. On the day, the Tar Heels hit into five double plays.
Junior right fielder Marshall Hubbard, who was 2-for-4 with two doubles, extended his season-best hitting streak to 18 games. Mangum also added two hits for the Tar Heels. Melvin was 3-for-5 to lead the Terrapin offense.
Carolina lefty Andrew Miller had a solid start but did not figure in the decision. He worked 6.1 innings and allowed one run on five hits and three walks. He struck out six batters. Maryland starter Sean Kane went six innings and gave up one run six hits and three walks.
The Tar Heels loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth but scored only one run to take a 1-0 lead. After a Chris Iannetta single, Hubbard doubled to left center for his second two-base hit of the afternoon. Third baseman Sammy Hewitt then reached on an error to load the bases. Iannetta scored the only run of the frame when left fielder Mike Daniel grounded into a double play.
Maryland tied the game in the seventh on an RBI single off the bat of designated hitter Matt Maropis. The hit to center, which came off reliever Whitley Benson, scored right fielder Truan Mehl, who reached on a walk and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Singletary. Benson came on in relief of Miller following Singletary's bunt.
The Tar Heels return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday versus South Carolina at in the Battle of the Boarder at Knights Stadium in Fort Mill, S.C.
