CHAPEL HILL -- University of North Carolina women's lacrosse midfielder Beth Ames was named a third-team All-America this week by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association and US Lacrosse. Ames was also named a third-team All-America by the website womenslacrosse.com, while freshmen Julie Gladchuk and Kristen Hordy were named to the website's Rookie Team.
With Ames' selection to the IWLCA/US Lacrosse team, the Tar Heels have had at least one player earn All-America honors from the organization in each of the last eight years (beginning in 1997). Most recently, Jazmine Norton earned second-team honors in 2003.
Ames led the Tar Heels in scoring for the second consecutive year as a senior in 2004, finishing the season with 33 goals and one assist for 34 points. She scored a career-high five goals vs. Old Dominion on April 13, 2004. Ames earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors for her efforts.
Gladchuk was one of the nation's top freshman defenders in 2004, while Hordy took over as Carolina's regular goalkeeper midway through the '04 season. Hordy led the Tar Heels with a goals-against average of 8.11 and over 569 minutes logged in the cage.
Carolina went 9-7 last season, narrowly missing an NCAA Tournament bid.
