Carolina's Women's Golf Team Finishes Sixth At Cougar Classic

Hanahan, S.C. - North Carolina's women's golf team finished in sixth place after carding a final-round 302 for an 897 total. Louisiana State fired a two-over-par 290 in the final round for an 873 total to come from behind and grab the team title. Tennessee, which led going into the final round, finished three strokes back at 876 after posting a 295 on the last day. Furman finished in third place at 881 while Virginia finished fourth at 883 and Wake Forest was fifth with an 887 total.
Rachel Smith from Virginia captured the individual title after firing a four-under 68 for a four-under 212 total. Violeta Retamoza from Tennessee finished one stroke back at 213 after carding a 74 in the final round. LSU's Vicky Meyer and Virginia's Leah Wigger tied for third place with two-under 214 totals. Furman's Jenny Suh finished in fifth place with a 215 total while teammate Theresa Palk finished sixth at 216.
The Tar Heels had two players finish in the top 20. Freshman Ann Laney, from Charlotte, N.C., finished in 14th place with a 221 total after firing a 75 in the final round. Sophomore Katie Miller, from Jeannette, Pa., also carded a final-round 75 to finish with a 223 total in a tie for 16th place. Beth Marushak and Laura Caniff, who was playing as an individual, tied for 27th place with 226 totals while Shannon Boyle tied for 42nd at 230 and Romi Irons tied for 48th place with a 232 total.
The 54-hole event was played at Yeamans Hall which features a par 72, 6,031-yard layout.
