The North Carolina gymnastics team has released its schedule for the 2005 competitive season. The team will begin competition as it has in the two previous years at the George Washington Invitational on Sat., Jan. 15.
The schedule shows seven meets on the road and three at home during the regular season. The Tar Heels will travel twice to Alabama, a state they have not competed in since 2000, when Carolina had an away meet at the University of Alabama. This year's group will head once to the University of Alabama and once to Auburn, which is also the site of the 2005 National Championships. Carolina will face the University of Iowa for the first time ever at the Auburn meet. Alabama, Auburn and Iowa all appeared at nationals in 2003, and Alabama and Iowa were both there in 2004.
"It's going to be a challenging schedule," said head coach Derek Galvin, "but one that we are eager to pursue. We wanted to face strong teams, and we certainly are."
Carolina will host the Governor's Cup -- an annual matchup that pairs NC State and Carolina against two teams from the state of Maryland, the University of Maryland and Towson University -- in what will be the meet's 10th year in existence. The location of the Governor's Cup alternates between the four teams involved each year. Carolina last hosted the meet in 2001.
This year's East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championship will be held at NC State, which Galvin says he is happy about because the team will not have to travel far.
"We began practice Tuesday (Sept. 7)," said Galvin, "and we're playing hard. We are excited about this season."
