CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Hughes recorded his sixth career shutout, and the North Carolina men's soccer team took a season-best 16 shots but was unable to find the back of the net, as the Tar Heels (1-2-2) played to a scoreless tie with UNC Wilmington (5-0-1) Wednesday at Fetzer Field.
In a match originally scheduled for Friday and moved up due to the threat of heavy rains this weekend, Hughes made his first start in goal of the season and recorded four saves in 110 minutes of action. Junior Ford Williams played the first four matches in goal for UNC.
Seven of Carolina's season-high shot total came off the foot of sophomore forward Jamie Watson, who took five first-half shots, including one off the cross bar. The Tar Heels outshot the Seahawks, 16-12 on the night and 2-0 in the final overtime.
UNC's best chance to escape with a win came on its final shot in the 109th minute, as midfielder Dax McCarty fed forward Marcus Storey on a give-and-go play inside the 18-yard box. Storey ended up with a one-on-one with UNCW keeper Brad Knighton but his shot sailed over the cross bar, essentially sealing the scoreless draw.
The Tar Heels also nearly ended the match in the final minute of regulation, as sophomore midfielder Michael Harrington's shot from the right flank to the far post snuck past Knighton, but was deflected by a Seahawk defender as time expired to send the game into overtime.
With the tie, the Tar Heels snapped a four-match losing streak at home and extended their unbeaten streak against UNCW to seven matches.
Carolina returns to action next Tuesday at Old Dominion and opens its Atlantic Coast Conference slate in Chapel Hill Sunday, September 26 against Virginia.
