North Carolina Women's Soccer Team Blanks Furman

DURHAM, N.C. - Five different players scored for the top-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team Friday night as the Tar Heels improved to 6-0-1 on the season by defeating Furman 5-0 in the first game of the 2004 Duke adidas Soccer Classic at Koskiinen Stadium. Kendall Fletcher, Heather O'Reilly and Lindsay Tarpley all scored for the Tar Heels who also reaped the rewards of the first career goals from freshmen defenders Katie Brooks and Robyn Gayle.
The Tar Heels outshot the Paladins, who are now 2-5 on the season, by a 23-4 margin and had nine corner kicks to two for Furman.
UNC got on the scoreboard in just the eighth minute of play as Kendall Fletcher of the Tar Heels scored her second goal of the season and her second in the past two games. Fletcher scored on a header off a corner kick initiated by Kacey White and then flicked on by Elizabeth Guess in the penalty area to Fletcher. Less than 16 minutes after Fletcher had given the Tar Heels the lead, UNC increased its advantage to 2-0 on sophomore forward Heather O'Reilly's second goal of the season at the 23:22 mark.
O'Reilly took a cross from freshman forward Jaime Gilbert and tapped the ball past Furman goalie Andie Hinshaw to make it 2-0 in favor of Carolina. UNC made it 3-0 at the 54:20 mark when Lindsay Tarpley scored her second goal of the season, also her second goal in the past two games. O'Reilly took a shot that became one of Hinshaw's 11 saves of the game but Tarpley pounced on the rebound and scored from the six-yard line.
The final two goals were both career firsts for Tar Heels. At 62:22, freshman defender Katie Brooks took a cross from senior midfielder Anne Felts and buried a shot to make it 4-0. Then at 73:53, Anne Morrell took a shot that was deflected by a Furman player to freshman defender Robyn Gayle who finished the opportunity for the 5-0 final margin.
Aly Winget played the first 72 minutes in goal for UNC and had one save while Elizabeth Lancaster played the last 18 minutes and also had one stop. UNC returns to the pitch to meet the Georgia Bulldogs (2-2-2) at 1 p.m. on Sunday during the second day of action in the 2004 Duke adidas Soccer Classic.
