NORTH CAROLINA NOTES
VS. LOUISVILLE
SEPTEMBER 25, 2004
Carolina senior quarterback Darian Durant was 10 for 19 for 80 yards and no touchdowns. The 80 yards passing were Durant's fewest since he threw for 76 yards against Auburn in the 2001 Peach Bowl. Durant also saw a streak of 10 consecutive games with a touchdown pass snapped. The last game Durant did not have a touchdown pass was against Virginia in 2003.
It is the first time in Durant's career he has thrown for less than 100 yards in a start (this was his 26th career start). However, a fourth down throw in the third quarter would likely have gone for a touchdown but was dropped.
With a season-best five catches against Louisville Saturday, senior Jarwarski Pollock moved into eighth on the career reception chart at Carolina with 111. He has nine catches on the season and needs eight more to tie L.C. Stevens for seventh on the all-time list. Na Brown holds the Tar Heel record with 165 career receptions.
Defensive tackle Terry Hunter and tailback Vince Wilson saw their first collegiate action Saturday against Louisville, bringing the total number of true freshmen to play this season to 13. This number is the highest for Carolina in at least 10 years. Twelve true freshmen saw action for the Tar Heels last season.
Redshirt freshman John Choate saw his first game action at punter for the Tar Heels. His first career punt pinned Louisville at its eight-yard line midway through the first quarter. He averaged 34.8 yards on four punts.
With no points in the first half, Carolina was shutout in a half for the first time this season. The last time the Tar Heels went a half without scoring was the first half of the Duke game last season.
Freshman Hilee Taylor recorded a sack for the second consecutive game Saturday against Louisville. Taylor, who has both UNC sacks this season, dropped Cardinal quarterback Brian Brohm for a 12-yard loss in the first half.
Carolina was shutout for the first time in any game and the first time at home since a 37-0 loss to Florida State on August 30, 2003.
The Tar Heels allowed 30 first downs, the most allowed since Wake Forest had 31 in 2003.
