Top-Ranked Tar Heels Beat Davidson, 4-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team, ranked No. 1 and off to its best start since 1995, shut out visiting Davidson 4-0 Tuesday evening at Francis E. Henry Stadium to improve to 12-0 on the season. The Wildcats fell to 3-6 with the loss.
Playing their third game in the last four days, the Tar Heels got on the board for the first time 12 minutes into the contest when senior Laura Douglas dribbled the ball into the circle and scored her first goal of the season. Carolina's next goal was by freshman Anne Marie Janus, who put back a rebound with 17:09 to play before halftime following a save by Wildcat goalkeeper Sarah Nolan, who totaled 19 saves for the game.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, junior Naomi Weatherald scored on a penalty corner, one of 14 in the game for UNC, to put the Tar Heels up 3-0. The final Carolina goal came with 4:40 remaining when junior Karen Mann tipped in a shot by senior Katy Potter.
Carolina had 45 shots in the game while holding Davidson without a shot. The shutout was UNC's eighth of the season and the team has given up just five goals while scoring 38.
Next up for UNC is a meeting with Wake Forest, ranked No. 2 in this week's national poll. The Atlantic Coast Conference rivals meet Saturday at 1 p.m. at Henry Stadium.
Davidson is back in action on Sunday when the Wildcats travel to Duke for a 1 p.m. game.
