GREENSBORO, N.C. - In its third consecutive match against a nationally-ranked opponent, the North Carolina men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 2 UNC Greensboro Wednesday at UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Spartans' James Goodman scored the only goal of the match in the 28th minute to drop the Tar Heels to 2-4-2 on the season. The Spartans remain unbeaten at 7-0-1.
Goodman netted his fifth goal of the year on a header off a cross from Egill Atlason at the 27:42 mark of the first half. That score was enough for the Spartans, who limited Carolina to just six shots on the night. The Tar Heel defense was also strong, allowed just nine shots and two corner kicks to the Spartans.
Junior Ford Williams made his first start in goal for the Tar Heels since September 12 and allowed one goal, while making two saves. The Spartans Jay Benfield and Ryan Nowak combined to shutout the Tar Heels for just the second time this season.
Carolina now holds a 7-3-1 lead in the all-time series with the Spartans, who have now defeated four Atlantic Coast Conference opponents this season.
Carolina returns to action at 7 p.m. Sunday at rival Duke, ranked No. 2 by Soccer America. The Blue Devils were 9-0-0 entering Wednesday's match with Appalachian State.
