CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
No. 1-ranked North Carolina scored on an own goal just 27 seconds into the match and later reaped goals from All-Americas Lori Chalupny and Heather O'Reilly as the Tar Heels defeated No. 14 Florida 3-0 in women's soccer action before 3,825 fans at Fetzer Field on Friday night. The game was the nightcap on the first day of the 2004 Carolina Nike Classic. No. 25 Duke defeated Kennesaw State 1-0 in the opening match.
Defending NCAA champion UNC improved to 3-0 with the victory over the Gators while Florida dropped to 2-1 on the campaign.
The Tar Heels got on the board less than 30 seconds into the match on an own goal. Lindsay Tarpley dribbled the ball deep into the left corner of the pitch and fed a cross to the middle of penalty area. Heather O'Reilly got her foot on it but the ball appeared to be going wide of the net along the end line until Florida's Monica Hoyles deflected it into the open Gator goal at the far post. The goal came just 27 seconds into the game.
It appeared that would be the halftime score but UNC's Lori Chalupny scored less than three minutes before intermission to give the Tar Heels some breathing room. After a Florida foul about 35 yards out on the right side, Kendall Fletcher restarted for UNC and instead of serving a ball into the box, she pushed it into the center of the field to Chalupny who was unmarked. Chalupny took two dribbles and then cranked a bullet from 28 yards that Florida goalkeeper Brittni Goodwin got her hands on but was unable to hold as it ended up in the back of the net.
Carolina got its third and final goal in the 72nd minute when the Tar Heels again capitalized on Goodwin's inability to hold onto a shot. Clearing the ball from its own end, the Tar Heels eventually found freshman Jaime Gilbert who struck the ball with velocity from just inside the 18. Goodwin made the stop but was unable to corral the ball. O'Reilly swooped in on the left side and buried the ball into the open goal from about two yards away.
The Tar Heels finished with a 12-7 edge in shots and had five corner kicks to three for Florida. Aly Winget made three saves on the night for UNC as she recorded her second solo shutout of the campaign. Goodwin had one save for the Gators.
The Carolina Nike Classic continues on Sunday with Duke meeting Florida at 1 p.m. and UNC playing Kennesaw State at 3 p.m.
