Carolina Remains Unbeaten In ACC With 3-1 Win Over Wolfpack

CARY, N.C. - Junior midfielder Lori Chalupny broke a 1-1 tie in the 67th minute and second-ranked North Carolina went on to beat NC State 3-1 in women's soccer action Thursday night before a crowd of 1,234 fans at SAS Soccer Park. The victory boosted the Tar Heels to 10-0-1 on the season and Carolina remain undefeated in the Atlantic Coast Conference at 3-0. The Wolfpack is 7-2-2 overall and 1-2 in the ACC as NC State dropped its second straight match.
Despite outshooting the Wolfpack 11-4 in the first half, the Tar Heels had to settle for a 1-1 tie with NC State at halftime. UNC got on the scoreboard first at the 14:14 mark of the match as sophomore forward Heather O'Reilly scored her sixth goal of the season and her fourth in the last three games to put the Tar Heels up 1-0. O'Reilly, from East Brunswick, N.J., took a pass from junior midfielder Kacey White a finished the UNC scoring chance with a header at the left post.
NC State tied the match before halftime as the Wolfpack got on the scoreboard at the 30:08 mark of the match. Allie Wilkerson of the Wolfpack notched her second goal of the season as she beat Tar Heel goalkeeper Aly Winget in a one-on-one situation. The Wolfpack's Anna Helenius assisted on the NC State goal.
UNC came out in the second half of the match and took control, outshooting the Wolfpack 19-0 in the final 45 minutes of play. The Tar Heels broke through to take the lead with Lori Chalupny, the St. Louis, Mo. native, providing the Tar Heels with the game-winner at the 66:31 mark. Chalupny scored the game-winner from 15 yards out off a restart, getting the assist from Heather O'Reilly. The goal was the fourth of the year for Chalupny.
Carolina finished off the scoring at 87:43 as freshman Jaime Gilbert scored her sixth goal of the season, assisted by UNC sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Guess. Gilbert beat NC State goalkeeper Megan Connors one-one-one to finish off the goal. Connors faced 30 Tar Heel shots and made nine saves on the night.
North Carolina will now take a week off before hosting ACC newcomer Miami next Thursday at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
