Tar Heels Picked Second by ACC Coaches

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The North Carolina baseball team was picked to finish second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2005 in the annual ACC Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released Friday by the conference office. The ACC's 11 head coaches selected newcomer Miami as the top pick with eight first place votes and a total of 118 points. The Hurricanes posted a 50-13 overall record a year ago and made their second-straight trip to the College World Series. The Tar Heels were second with 110 points and three first place votes, after compiling a 43-21 mark in 2004.
Georgia Tech (93) and Florida State (89) stand in third and fourth place, respectively. Both teams advanced to the Super Regionals of the 2004 NCAA Baseball Championship.
Clemson claims fifth place with 80 points, while Virginia places sixth with 63 points. NC State stands in seventh place with 55 points, followed by Wake Forest in eighth with 34 and Maryland in ninth with 30 points. Duke and Virginia Tech share tenth place with 27 points apiece.
Carolina opens its 2005 season against Appalachian State on February 16 at Boshamer Stadium.
